Why We Chose Industrial Compostable Over “Recyclable”

Why We Chose Industrial Compostable Over “Recyclable”

If you’ve ever tossed something “recyclable” in the bin and thought, Cool, I just saved the planet, we hate to be the bearer of bummer news: a lot of that stuff never actually gets recycled.

Here’s the truth: recycling is great in theory, but not so great in practice, especially for flexible plastics like refill pouches.

The Problem with “Recyclable” Pouches

Many “recyclable” refill pouches are made from mixed materials or special plastics that most curbside programs won’t touch. Even if the pouch technically can be recycled, it often needs to go to a specialty facility… and let’s be honest, most of us aren’t mailing in our empties.

Translation: a lot of “recyclable” pouches end up in the landfill anyway.

Our Choice: Certified Industrial Compostable

Instead of pretending our pouches will have a second life as a park bench (spoiler: they won’t), we chose something better: certified industrial compostable materials.

This means:

  • Our pouches break down under the right composting conditions into natural, non-toxic elements — no microplastics left behind.

  • Certification isn’t just a pretty stamp — it’s proof our pouches meet strict standards for compostability.

🏆 Why It Matters

  • No Landfill Limbo: The pouch is designed to go back to the earth, not sit in a heap for 400 years.

  • Lower Waste Footprint: You refill your bottle over and over, and the pouch disappears into compost instead of cluttering up recycling plants.

  • Clear Conscience: You know where it’s going and how it’s breaking down — no wishcycling guilt.

📦 The Big Picture

We can’t solve the global packaging crisis in one soap refill… but we can make smarter choices.
For us, that meant skipping the “maybe recyclable” greenwashing and choosing a solution that actually leaves nothing nasty behind.
